Curriculum Launch Event
The Teaching The Levees launch event was held on September 6, 2007, at the Cowin Center at Teachers College, Columbia University. The event honored Spike Lee’s award-winning documentary film, When the Levees Broke and the curriculum deisgned to accompany it, "Teaching The Levees". New York Tmes Op-Ed columnist Bob Herbert moderated a distinguished panel to discuss the questions:
What kind of country are we?
What kind of country do we want to be?
Panel participants included: Lee Bollinger (President, Columbia University), Cynthia Hedge-Morrell (New Orleans Councilwoman), Gloria Ladson-Billings (Professor, University of Wisconsin), and Eddie S. Glaude (Professor, Princeton University). Speakers included Marcia Lyles (Deputy Chancellor of New York City Public Schools), When the Levees Broke co-producer, Sam Pollard, along with Jackie Glover of HBO and Darren Walker of the Rockefeller Foundation.
